By, Olatoye Temiloluwa

After over an hour delay caused by the SUB field being used for other matches, the Political Science Freshers vs Staylites match kicked off at exactly 5:42 pm on Thursday, 6th of July, 2024. The weather was cold and the atmosphere chilled as a result of rainfall earlier in the afternoon.  Nonetheless, the players soon got heated up from running around the field in an attempt to dominate the match, and the game got intense.

Goal !! After a few minutes of play, the Staylites team showed their strength and brute tenacity as A.Y, a 200-level student, shot a fierce shot into the Freshers’ net to put the Staylite team ahead in the match.

Three minutes later, the freshers had barely recovered from that blow when another 200-level Staylite, Ahmad, beautifully placed the ball into the Freshers’ net !! A second goal in favour of the Staylites who dominated the match and had every inch of the field covered.

The First half ended with a 2-0 scoreline in favour of the Stalite team. The second half began and the match continued with both teams tossing the ball around and dribbling in gallant efforts to control the last half of the match. A few minutes into the half, the  Freshers applied pressure and almost made it into their opponents’ net multiple times but they were met with the undaunted composure and resilience of the Staylites each time.

Some Pressure and more pressure!!  The Staylites passed the ball among themselves and pushed forward, Ayobayo, a 200-level  student gained possession of the ball, encountered obstacles which he breezed past like a piece of cake, and In a vain attempt to stop him, the freshers’ goalkeeper came forward to tackle him and that was when he saw his chance and seized it! A precise shot into an abandoned goalpost !! Goal!! Staylites 3-0 Freshers.

Minutes later, the Staylites were prowling around the Freshers’ den when a tough shot hit Oluwaseun, a Fresher defender , at his ankle as he tried to prevent the ball from getting too close to the net but he failed fatally and as he fell in pain, the Staylites capitalized on the chance to extend their lead in the match. A shot by  Bright, a 200-level student made it to the back of the net and the Staylites were four goals ahead in the game. Oluwaseun was attended to by the medical team and he was substituted, the match continued thereafter.

12 minutes to the end of the match, the spectators burst into laughter after Ahmad scored the final goal of the day. In an attempt to stop the goal, the Freshers’ goalkeeper made three consecutive saves but was beaten at the fourth attempt. Unable to do anything else, he gave up and laid on an imaginary bed by the goalpost as he watched the ball sail perfectly into his net.

The referee blew the final whistle and the match ended at 7:00 pm with the score being 5-0 in favour of the Staylites. This ‘Cat-breaking’  event will not fade anytime soon in the minds of the new  Cats as it is their first match as a level in the Institution. Hopefully, they derive some sort of motivation in a quest to be a better football team.

The Freshers still have a chance at redemption and to make a good second impression in the Department at the upcoming football match against the Oldest Cats ( the Finalists).
