The Department of Political Science (POS) on Tuesday, 13th of August 2024 continued their Seal Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over the Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education (KHE) to qualify for the tournament quarter-finals.
The match which took place at the old football pitch, SUB started with both teams putting their best feet forward in the round of 16 fixture in a valiant effort to join Stats, MBBS, Psychology, and Microbiology in the quarter-finals.
While both sides struggled to control the tempo of the game in the early minutes of the competition, KHE played more with the ball and kept the POS defence on their toes with their attackers trying to penetrate POS defence. However, KHE attacks were repelled by the opponent’s backline.
Political Science caught KHE off guard with a counterattack in the first half, and POS winger, Obaloluwa seized the opportunity by manoeuvring the ball around three KHE defenders before finding the back of the net with a powerful and precise kick.
The referee signalled the end of the half of the competition after 30 minutes of football with POS playing with more intensity and controlling the pace of the game.
The second half went underway with both teams playing with renewed intensity and struggling to dominate the last 30 minutes of the contest.
A controversial red card for POS striker, Tunji shifted the pace of the match to KHE’s favour who tried to capitalise on their numerical strength to score an equaliser. But their increased intensity barely made a dent as the POS goalkeeper was barely threatened by the opponent’s attacks.
After 60 minutes, the referee signalled the the end of the second half of the round of 16 encounter with Political Science maintaining their clean sheet streak into the quarter-finals of the tournament with a 1-0 win over KHE.
