The Literary and Debating Society (TLDS) of the University of Ibadan hosted the quarterfinals of the Jaw War debate competition today, December 10, 2024. The debate which was held at the Faculty of The Social Sciences, saw six faculties clash in a battle of wits, logic, and eloquence.
The competition began at 6:30 pm as the faculty of Agriculture representatives mounted the podium to debate the topic, “The 21st century feminism: Healthy or Toxic?” against the faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
The second round had the faculty of The Social Sciences in an intense face-off with the faculty of law with Social Sciences debating in support of the topic, “Colonialism legacy: Should African Nations Seek Reparation for Colonialism?” The faculty of The Social Sciences was represented by Adebayo Abdulrahman and Ola-Stephen Favour both 400-level students of Political Science.
In the third round of debate, representatives from the Faculty of Nursing and the Faculty of Arts went head-to-head on the topic “Boarding school: beneficial or detrimental to students”. The debate saw both teams present compelling arguments, leaving the audience and judges eager to declare a winner.
After all rounds of debate, one of the Judges for the night, popularly referred to as OPC took to the stage to commend and make some corrections to some speeches.
With the results compiled, the judge announced that due to a tie between the second speaker from Social Sciences, Ola-Stephen Favour and the first speaker from Law, Chineke it was impossible to decide the best speaker for the night. To resolve the tie, an impromptu debate round was organised with the topic, “Is the NYSC program still relevant in Nigeria.” The impromptu debate was won by Chineke Ugochukwu who was later announced as the best speaker for the night.
Afterwards, the Chief Judge announced the results of the three rounds of debate held at the quarter-final stage. The results are as follows:
Faculty of Agriculture- 78.9% Vs. Faculty of Veterinary Medicine- 73.5%
Faculty of The Social Sciences- 83.75% Vs Faculty of Law- 81.1
Faculty of Nursing- 74% Vs Faculty of Arts- 80.12
The event came to a close at 8:40p.m.
