The hustle and bustling as you make your way hurriedly to class knowing you’re late or would be late if you delayed for a second is wild opium, you may never know how high you get off it until you it’s gone, and you miss it. Staying on-campus or off-campus doesn’t make many dents- you feel it while shuffling to class and miss it when you have no classes to go to.
The 7th week of the academic session came in like a thief in the night. I have no idea how we moved from the 1st week to the 7th week and it must be so for a lot of other people but either way the weeks won’t stop and classes won’t halt.
Week 1-3 classes were held on various online platforms or were supposed to be held on online platforms. For some departments, it was successful and for others, it was an additional three weeks’ break and a lot of ground left to cover when school resumed physically.
The second semester is the busiest in the academic session, there are a lot of things to do and attend to ranging from academics to sports, extra-curricular activities, school elections, social activities etc. I could feel a lot of people’s grades (mine included) drop if proper compartmentalization isn’t done. It’s all fun and galore till tests and assignments start rolling in and exams seal of the semester signalling the end of the session.
For sports, the 200lv are currently playing in the survival cup, a football competition competed by interested departments (200lvs) all over the university. The competition has a maximum of 32 teams competing. Having won their first match against the faculty of Renewable Natural Resources (RNR) with a lone goal they return to action on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, to play the second leg of the fixture and decide their faith. Also, the HOD’s Cup, an intra-department football competition will take place this semester between the 100lv-400lv. The competition was won last session by the current 400lv students. The Dean’s Cup, an Intra-faculty football match between the departments in the faculty (political science, sociology, psychology, geography) is also taking place this semester. Lastly, the university’s inter-faculty competition will also take place this semester. It is worth it note that FATSSA is the defending champion and this year we go out to defend our title.
In another scene, Jaw- war, the biggest oratory contest in the university starts on Tuesday, 11 April 2023. Apart from Jaw-war which will be contested by the faculty, the department also has other debates to compete.
The Senate also have an eventful week ahead to debate various budgets, approve the budgets and also audit the finances and expenditures on the myriads of activities that are slated for the semester while the Executive organ will be neck-deep in planning, planning and more planning.
POSSPREES will be present to write and disseminate information as we have always done and keep the department informed about everything that goes on in the department also organize an effective press night for all political aspirants in the department and gauge their readiness for posts they aspire for.
On the social scene, the departmental picnic was organized last semester which leaves this semester with; Faculty’s picnic, department’s dinner, faculty’s dinner and a lot of other social activities that will be taking place outside the faculty. Events like UI’ SU week, Mr and Mrs UI and so on.
