POLITICAL HYPOCRISY ON THE INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM

By Abiola Akintunde

Over time, the identity of the sovereign state in the international system dwells in her ability to participate in political hypocrisy with the West. After the dissolution of the USSR which birthed Russia and the other 14 countries, the bipolarity identity of the international system witnessed a paradigm shift to Mono-polarity. The ‘Almighty’ ego of the United State of America multiplied to the extent that even the only universal international organization saddled with the responsibilities to checkmate/caution the excesses of the state has become handicapped.  We are now in a hypocritic world of Realism with no regard for idealism, as long as the common excuse of maintaining international peace and security is always valid to be rolled out. United Nations Security Council has become a tool in the hands of the United State and its allies. NATO now dictate the affairs of security architecture on the international system in a partial manner as long as their allies are winning.

As much as we all need to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, we also need to do the same on the global outrage and energy into the Israel-Palestine conflict that is cutting the lives of non-combatants as well as combatants short. Isreal’s disregard for human lives, from children to old and public execution of journalists with sniper rifles. The soul of tens of thousands of Iraqis and Afghanistan for over 15 years of war in the Middle -East with no significant difference has no one to question the Police of the World.  Khāshqujī widow, friends and colleagues wail for an answer for the death of their beloved Jamāl Aḥmad Khāshqujī, but as long as the USA-SAUDI relation is in play, nothing happened!  Commending FIFA for resisting the imposition of LGBTQ colour and identities at the ongoing QATAR2022 world cup is not just enough. I could’ve called for collective resistance from states especially African countries against the Eurocentric, Westernized and Americanization system that has been infused into our Pan-Africanism.  Article 2 of the United Nations  Charter clearly states the equality principle amongst United Nations members, but we all know who is who and where that ‘equality’ resides in reality at the international system. International Organizations and ‘third world countries ‘ has over the years become a pawn in the international politics game of Chess, whom the King and Queens send on errands with a lot of financial inducement in the name of aid and grants.

The conference of Parties (COP) was initiated by countries to collectively take action towards achieving the world’s collective climate goals as agreed upon under the Paris Agreement and the Convent has become a Conference of Power, powerful state’s non-commitment is jeopardizing its purposes for personal nation’s interest.  In as much as there is no enforcement to international crime, where agreements are based on ‘good faith’, we should also take it upon ourselves to consider if not those agreements or treaties, but the existence of humankind irrespective of colour, nation-state, beliefs/ideologies.
