The University of Ibadan Students Union kicks off a protest on campus today, July 17, 2024, demanding a reversal of the fee increase, withdrawal of the memo on electricity rationing and an end to the victimisation of three students who peacefully protested on May 13, 2024
According to the circular released by the union, the protest is aimed at reversing the fee increase and securing a refund for those who have already paid the increased fees. The union is also calling on the school authority and Maintenance to withdraw the Memo on electricity rationing released on July 16, 2024.
Also, the union is calling for an end to the victimization of Aduwo Ayodele, Nice Linus, and Olamide Gbadegesin, who were queried for their involvement in the May 13 protest.
As part of the protest, lectures and transportation within the school premises have been suspended for the day.
The circular was signed by the union’s president, Aweda Bolaji, general secretary, Ogundijo Dolapo Japheth, and the speaker of the students’ representative council (SRC), Opegbemi Matthias Busoye.
This protest developed from the growing tensions between the university management and students over the fee increase, which has been described as “exorbitant” by many students.
