The semi-final round of Jawwar commenced today, Tuesday, December 17, 2024. Held at the Social Sciences Large Lecture Theatre (LLT), the matchup featured teams from both the Halls of Residence and Faculties categories.
For the Faculties category, the Faculty of The Social Sciences competed against the Faculty of Agriculture and the Faculty of Law was pitched against the Faculty of Arts.
The Halls of Residence category saw Queen Idia Hall compete against Nnamdi Azikwe Hall and Queen Elizabeth II Hall competed against Lord Tedder Hall
The debate for the night started with the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Agriculture debating on “Should AI development be strictly regulated to prevent potential misuse.” The speakers for the Faculty of Social Sciences were Yahya Dorcas as the first speaker and Zainab Yusuff as the second speaker. Speaking for the Faculty of Agriculture were Akintunde Iwalode as the first speaker and Iyunade Micheal as the second speaker.
The second debate of the night was between the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Arts on the topic “Do the benefits of the international monetary fund outweigh the cost?” The Faculty of Arts was represented by Sekinat Kareem and Ifeduwa Fatoki while the Faculty of Law was represented by Olagunwa Micheal and Adebayo Folakemi.
On the Halls of Residence category, Queen Idia Hall and Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall debated on “Local government autonomy in Nigeria; The way forward.” Queen Idia Hall was represented by Kayode Favour and Bassey Nini as the first and second speakers respectively. For Nnamdi Azikwe Hall, Oyedijo Olarewaju and Adebiyi Emmanuel served as the first and second speakers.
The second round in the Hall category between Queen Elizabeth II Hall and Lord Tedder Hall had the debaters debate on “Can performance-based funding help address the college dropout problem?” Queen Elizabeth II Hall was represented by Leshi Kehinde and Olabisi Owadayo while Lord Tedder Hall was represented by Akande Omobobola James and Aweda Bolaji Oluwadamilola.
After the rounds of debate and rebuttal rounds, Dr. Damilola Lewis, one of the judges, made some remarks and corrections on the night’s debate. After this, the Chief Judge, Professor Remi Aiyede, took to the podium to announce the results.
The results announced by Prof. Remi Aiyede are as follows: Faculty of Agriculture 52.5% – Faculty of Social Sciences 73.5%, Faculty of Law 69% – Faculty of Arts 65.5%, Queen Idia Hall 64.75%- Nnamdi Azikwe Hall 60.75%, Queen Elizabeth II Hall 66.7% – Lord Tedder Hall 74%. Also, Yahya Dorcas representing the Faculty of Social Sciences won the best speaker for the Faculties category while Akande Omobobola from Lord Tedder Hall was awarded the best speaker for the Hall category.
With the Faculty of Social Sciences emerging victorious over the Faculty of Agriculture, the stage is set for a final showdown against the Faculty of Law at ICC. Meanwhile, in the Halls of Residence category, Lord Tedder Hall and Queen Idia Hall will clash in the finals.
