On Monday, 25th September, 2023. A by-election was held in the Department of Political Science to fill the vacant seats in the NAPSS executive. The empty seats that warranted the conduction of a by-election were the office of the Financial Secretary, Sports Director and Treasurer. Article 23 Section 4(a) States that, “There is a tie or when there is a genuine election upheld by the electoral tribunal. In the event that any executive member is removed, a bye-election shall be conducted into the office”.
Now let us dive straight into the details. Which candidates contested for the respective positions and the number of votes that placed them in pole position to win the election. As stated in Chapter six (6) Article 21 Section 8, “Voting shall be by secret ballot”. Reference upheld, section 9 of the same chapter provides that, “A candidate shall be declared elected by simple majority and in the event of a tie, the electoral committee shall arrange a bye election within 3 working days between the candidates with the tie” However, in the just concluded election, there was no tie. The Office of the Treasurer: Salami Adedolapo Azeezat Contested unopposed and emerged victorious with a total number of 143 valid votes out of 156 votes. 12 electorates voted “undecided” while a vote was declared void.
The Office of the Financial Secretary: Edosoghe Favour and Oloyede Olawumi contested for this position. A total of 155 votes were cast. Olawumi polled 49 votes while Favour polled 99 votes making her the victor. 6 electorates voted “undecided” while a vote was declared void.
The Office of the Sports Director: Adeoba Adesanmi and Matthew Fiyinfoluwa contested for this position. A total of 156 votes were cast. Adeoba polled 85 votes making him the victor while Matthew polled 67 votes. 3 electorates voted “undecided” while a vote was declared void.
Students of the NAPSS community have decided through their franchise enabled through the provision of democracy extant in the NAPSS community. Thus, the POSSpress would leverage the extant democratic precepts in serving as the voice of the NAPSS community on the activities of the executive to ensure accountability in the administration
