The Union of Campus Journalists (UCJ, UI) held the 36th Induction Ceremony together with the first edition of the Global Campus Journalism Summit tagged; The Future of Journalism, Press Censorship, Digital Misinformation anMissing Perspective, at the KAAF auditorium in the Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics on the 30th of November, 2024 in the University of Ibadan.
At the auditorium, the new Inductees who had passed the Induction exam held on the 24th of August, 2024 were seated and the induction event commenced some minutes after 9 am with the recitation of the National anthem and the UI anthem followed by the press prayer.
The induction ceremony began with an opening address from the Union’s President, Miss Tosanwunmi Elizabeth Tarre, who congratulated the inductees and welcomed them into the Union. She encouraged them to uphold the ethics of journalism and to be fair, transparent and accountable in their reports.
The keynote speakers for the event were , Oluwabunmi Ishola, an Editor at The Nigerian Tribune and an alumnus of the Union and Motunrayo Alaka. Other notable personalities and alumni of the union were also in attendance.
The Union also recognized the efforts of some newly Inducted members. Mr Omolola Fatope was given the Martin’s Isaac Award with a cash prize of 100,000 naira for being the best 36th inductee. Miss Adeyemo Mercy was announced as the winner of the Sunday Oguntola Essay Competition and was given a cash price of 60,000 naira.
Adebumowo Jesutomiwo was also rewarded as the Best Energetic inductee of the 36th administration with a cash prize of 150k.
The Oath-taking was done by the inducted members which signified their official membership of the Union of Campus Journalists, UI.
The Global Campus Journalism Summit 1.0 commenced with the introduction of some important personnel. During the summit, the Union launched her annual magazine, “Impulse”. The invited dignitaries and Alumni gave their remarks on the magazine and also donated towards the development of the magazine.
Scholarship awards were granted to some members of the union by the alumni body. The Union also presented some awards to certain personalities.
For the first panel session, the speakers were called upstage: Hon. Chief Adeniyi Imbrahim Oluwatosin who was absent but sent a representative, Comrade Kehinde Ayotunji.
The second speaker, Mr Gbenga Omotosho and the third speaker, Miss Olamide Tejuoso.
Mr Emmanuel, the past Editor-in-Chief of Unilorin Journalism was the moderator of the Session.
They discussed the thin line between Public Relations and Journalism, the issue of propaganda, press Censorship and digital misinformation.
For the second panel session, the speakers were invited to the stage in person of
Mr Isaac Brown, Mrs Oluseyi Awojulugbe, Rahma Jimoh
The moderator for this session was an Editor-in-Chief from ACJ, OAU. Their discussion swept through sports journalism, finance journalism, Social media journalism, and Tech journalism.
Finally, certificates of membership were given to the newly inducted members of the Union, foods and souvenirs were distributed and the event came to a close at past4 pm.
