Following the leaked media of FATSSSA President, Mr. Olumi’s speech with some unidentified FATSSSAsites, the atmosphere within the faculty has been filled with curiosity, questions, assumptions, and interpretations whispered in various circles.
In the media, it appears that Mr. Olumi expressed concerns about one of the presidential aspirants and the current General Secretary of the association, Miss Gloria Popoola, and her ability to lead the faculty. He cited concerns about her “work rate” and subtly suggested that Miss Gloria lacked this quality.
This has caused confusion among some FATSSSAsites who have expressed satisfaction with Miss Gloria’s performance as General Secretary, pointing to initiatives like the successful United Nations Model as evidence of her dedication.
It is essential to note that there is no law preventing the president from campaigning for a candidate of his choice, either openly or subtly. If Mr. Olumi decides to support the presidential candidate from his department, Psychology, popularly known as “Sammy,” or any other candidate, he has not violated any constitutional rules.
Some students from the Department of Political Science, which is also Miss Gloria’s constituency, have accused the president of playing divisive politics and attempting to cause disunity among their ranks. They claim that the president’s support for the AGS candidate, popularly known as “Huncho,” who is also from the Political Science constituency, is evidence of this. Mr. Olumi’s support for Huncho was clearly communicated in his speech, as were his efforts to rally his constituency behind him. He accused the Political Science constituency of not supporting Huncho’s aspirations and spoke at length about how the Psychology department would back him instead. This has sparked numerous questions and debates within the Political Science community regarding the relationship between Mr. Olumi and Huncho. Many Political Science students believe that Huncho has betrayed Miss Gloria and formed an alliance with Psychology.
However, in a phone conversation with Huncho, he vehemently denied these allegations. He explained that he had merely asked his friends from Psychology, who are primarily 100-level students, to vote for him in the upcoming elections and that he had no pact with either Mr. Olumi or the Psychology department. Notably, he also insisted that he was not present during the conversation in question.
The leaked media of Mr. Olumi’s speech has created an atmosphere of uncertainty and speculation within the faculty. While it is within anyone’s rights to support any candidate they chooses, the allegations of divisive politics have raised questions about the motives behind these alliances. As the situation continues to unfold, it is essential for NAPSSITES and FATSSSAITES as a whole, to remain informed and critically evaluate the information they receive to ensure a fair and democratic election process.
