The first and the best is a catchy phrase that commands respect but comes with a lot of pressure. While I have never seen an Uite who does not take pride in his citadel of learning or boast about how the University leads and others follow; I’ve seen many Uites crumbling under school stress, saddled with assignments, team papers, tests and other obligations they are compelled with to retain their studentship and maintain a good grade. To a lot of Uites, school is just a shuttle between the library, class, a religion house and once in a while their hostels to get some sleep and spare some seconds to take a bath. The department of political science is not different, with students in the department contributing to the circular movement of the library- class- religion house and a minute stop over at their hostel rooms. A lot of Uites and as an extension, NAPSSites have no idea that there are more things to do in school and other events to participate in.
Same Old Story….
An average uite defends their non-participation in other activities with stories of the struggles and stress they underwent to secure admission into the university or the strain they are facing presently:
I wrote JAMB six times and I only want to attend classes and graduate.
I wished I could participate but I’m reading for a test coming up in two weeks
Sounds boring, I will pass.
Looks like it will be interesting but I’ve three assignments to write…..
A picnic Affairs
In a chat with the department of political science social director, Akintunde Julius, about the proposed picnic coming up on 11 December 2022 at the botanical garden, he revealed that the plan for the proposed picnic is going smoothly and at least 150 NAPSSites are expected or budgeted to buy a ticket which costs #500 and show up for the picnic.
Furthermore, he explained that the department would be merging with Geography, another department in the faculty of social sciences. The merger is necessary due to the ridiculous cost of items, and it would also go a long way to foster the spirit of friendship between the two departments. Julius, believes “two heads are better than one”.
The ticket sales are still ongoing and it looks promising. Despite the cost of inflation, he promised NAPSSites a good and fulfilling programme. His efforts are geared towards making NAPSSites get value for their money and have an entertaining break from academic stress. He assured that the event already has some sponsors and he is working on getting more. The strict policy of no ticket no entry will be enforced.
Lastly, he urged NAPSSites to participate in the social activities of the department. “Dear NAPSSites, As the social director, I am urging us all to be more active and participate in the social activities of the department, I know our main priority in this citadel of learning is for academic purposes, but it won’t be out of order to come out and have fun with other department members. Memories like this will keep us going, even in our strive for excellence. Looking forward to seeing you at the picnic. God bless us all”
