The University of Ibadan (UI) has been ranked the fourth-best university in Africa and 264th globally in the 2026–2027 Best Global Universities rankings released by U.S. News & World Report.
The latest ranking, published on June 16, places Nigeria’s premier university ahead of several long-established institutions across the continent, making it the only university from West Africa to secure a place among Africa’s top ten universities.
According to the rankings, South Africa’s University of Cape Town retained the top position in Africa, followed by Cairo University in Egypt and the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. The University of Ibadan occupies the fourth position on the continent and first position in West Africa and Nigeria respectively.
The U.S. News & World Report rankings are among the most respected university assessment systems in the world. U.S. News is widely regarded as one of the “Big Four” global university ranking organisations, alongside the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, the QS World University Rankings, and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), commonly known as the Shanghai Ranking.
The rankings assess universities worldwide using indicators largely centred on research performance. These include global and regional research reputation, academic publications, citation impact, international collaboration, and the production of highly cited papers.
UI’s strong performance in the rankings reflects the institution’s sustained contribution to research and scholarship, with studies produced by its faculty and researchers attracting significant recognition and citations within the international academic community.
Unlike rankings that consider factors such as student experience, campus facilities, or employability, the U.S. News methodology focuses primarily on research output and academic influence. As a result, the ranking is widely regarded as a measure of an institution’s research strength and global scholarly impact.
The development further reinforces the University of Ibadan’s status as one of Africa’s leading centres of learning and research, while highlighting its role as West Africa’s highest-ranked institution in the latest assessment.
