After series of consultations, student polls, and debates, the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) has officially approved an increase in Basic Dues for both Faculties and Halls—from ₦3,000 to ₦4,000.
The decision was reached during an SRC sitting held on April 7, 2025, following extensive deliberations. The decision comes after the Chief Whip of the SRC presented the outcome of a poll conducted during the long recess. The results showed a mixed reaction from the student body: 590 students from Hall constituencies and 582 from Faculty constituencies voted against the proposed increment, making a total of 1,172 dissenting voices. However, the number of students who supported the increase stood at 509 and 668 from Hall and Faculty constituencies respectively, summing up to 1,177 votes in favour.
Commenting on the results, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Honourable Shoge Quadri, acknowledged the closeness of the figures but emphasized that the majority had spoken. “Those that voted for a yes are more than those that voted for a no by a slight margin,” he stated during the sitting. The House saw a flurry of proposals as members debated the new amount for Basic Dues. Hon. Ajayi James initially suggested raising the dues to ₦5,000, but later withdrew his motion after Hon. Mojoyinola from the Bello Hall Constituency stepped in with an amendment, proposing a more moderate ₦4,000. Other members also weighed in—Hon. Qudus recommended ₦3,500, while Hon. Oduola Peter backed the ₦4,000 option.
After deliberations, the Council subjected the proposals to a vote. In the end, 24 Honourable Members voted in favour of ₦4,000, while 17 members supported the ₦3,500 proposal. The Speaker subsequently affirmed the new rate: “Basic Dues to be increased from ₦3,000 to ₦4,000,” officially sealing the Council’s resolution.
