The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Eid-ul-Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
The declaration was announced on Friday by the Minister of Interior, Mr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
According to the statement, the holiday is intended to allow Muslim faithful across Nigeria to observe the religious occasion. Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and those in the diaspora, urging citizens to reflect on values associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad, particularly compassion, humility and service to others.
The minister said the values remained important to the country at a time when national unity and peaceful coexistence continue to attract public attention.
In his statement, he said: “Every Eid-ul-Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others.”
He further encouraged Nigerians, regardless of religious affiliation, to use the occasion as an opportunity to promote peaceful coexistence, mutual respect and understanding.
The minister also called on citizens to pray for peace and national cohesion, stressing that building a united Nigeria was a collective responsibility. While wishing Muslims a peaceful celebration, Mr Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to celebrate responsibly and with respect for one another.
