The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of popular Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo. He was 40.
News of the actor’s death emerged on Tuesday evening, after some of his close colleagues in the film industry took to social media to mourn him with emotional tributes.
Award winning actress Funke Akindele, in a heartfelt message shared via her Instagram story, expressed shock over the tragic development, revealing that she had attempted to reach him before his passing.“Rest in peace, Alex. I tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best,” she wrote.
Actor Bolanle Ninalowo also reacted to the news from the United States, praying for strength and healing for the late actor’s family and friends.
Meanwhile, fellow Nollywood actor Godwin Nnadiekwe described Ekubo’s death as devastating, stating that the industry had lost “a rare soul.”
Although the family of the late movie star is yet to release an official statement, the news has already sparked widespread reactions across social media, with fans and colleagues expressing disbelief and grief.
Ekubo’s death comes barely weeks after concerns about his health and wellbeing resurfaced online following his first public appearance after months away from social media. A viral video showing the actor looking noticeably slimmer had triggered emotional reactions from fans, many of whom questioned his condition.
Before his death, the actor had largely stayed away from public attention and social media activity, fueling speculation among followers. Known for his charm, fashion sense, and standout performances in Nollywood productions, Alex Ekubo remained one of the most recognised faces in Nigeria’s entertainment industry for over a decade.
