STUDY TIPS FOR FRESHMEN

by Sunlight

Once again we welcome our fellow freshmen into  this prestigious  University of Ibadan. I trust we all can tell from these past two  weeks of post-strike learning  that this is a very different system of learning  compared to the ones we are used to  prior to our admission into this great citadel of learning.

POSSPRESS brings to you tips to ease  academic stress and guarantee good success at the end of this academic session.

1. You should realize that this is an entirely different system and you should note that you will need a different  approach or better put an upgraded approach to attaining success. This system  requires extra effort, adding extra to whatever you have been doing before to get an extra ordinary result. Quit that pre-university reading pattern.  You need to UPGRADE.

2. Don’t be ashamed to seek help when you are confused: you  are now in a different facet of life, this is a phase  you have not passed through before but you have people that have gone ahead. It is normal to be in need of help, but it is very important if you seek help and not be too confident in your ignorance and make costly mistakes that will affect your success at the end.  You can walk up to senior colleagues to put you through and at the end you will be glad you did.

3.  Avoid academic sluggishness: This is bound to happen to everyone, but we have to fight against such an attitude.  Sluggishness is operating slowly than usual and with less energy. This act will reduce your success rate.  What should be done for an hour is now done for  ten hours . This is an absolute waste of time and resources.

3. Do not be in a haste to make friends: This is one of  the biggest decisions you will make as a newly admitted student. Friends can make or mar your life. Take time to make friends that will affect you positively  and push you to attain the best.

4. Manage your time: Time lost may  never be regained.  Time is the most valuable capital. A non- replaceable asset.

       A day = 86,400 seconds

       A week = 604,800 seconds

       A month= 2,620,600 seconds

       A year= 31,449,600 seconds

   Life itself is in seconds!

5. Inhabit these virtues: Discipline, Dedication, Determination, These virtues go a long way to guarantee  success in your life.  If these virtues are applied diligently success is attainable.

6. Stay focused : Focus is the way to sustain your passion.  Direct all your energy to ensure your goals are achievable. Focus is concentration of attention, when you expend all of your energy to your goal. Success is inevitable. According to  Matthew Williams,  the first key of success is concentration.

7.  Learn to juggle your  Academics and work, business, relationships seamlessly: Your primary assignment in this university is your academics, every other thing can then follow. Do not allow any other activity make your academics of less priority.

8. Do not neglect two- unit courses: a majority of you place more attention on courses with more units and discard the ones of lesser units,  this is definitely wrong.  Every course is important and all are aimed at improving our Cumulative Grade Points. Those two units courses that we neglect are those termites that eat up your grades.

9. Attend classes:  It is in attending  classes you better understand what you would read on your own.  Skipping classes is one of the dirty habits of students. There is no way one can attend classes without gaining something.   Attending classes also fetches you marks.

10. Develop a personal relationship with the supreme being: It is only God that grants good  success,  He is the one who crowns your efforts. Having God at your back helps you to be the best in all you do.

I wish you all  good success in this academic session.
