The University of Ibadan (UI) has announced a temporary suspension of water supply across its campus due to ongoing stabilisation work on the Awba Dam embankment. This was contained in an internal memorandum issued on July 6 by the Office of the Registrar, G.O. Saliu.
According to the memo, the rehabilitation exercise is crucial to prevent the collapse of the embankment and avoid potentially disastrous consequences. “The stabilisation exercise is essential to preventing the collapse of the embankment and its attendant disastrous consequences,” the memo stated.
The University assured students and members of the campus community that all efforts are being made to complete the work in the shortest possible time. While the exact duration of the disruption was not disclosed, the Registrar expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and called for understanding and cooperation from the university community.“We regret all inconveniences caused by the pause in water supply and solicit for understanding. Kindly bear with us,” the memo added.
The Awba Dam, a significant water source for the university, has undergone various phases of maintenance over the years. This current exercise is part of efforts to ensure long-term sustainability and safety of the infrastructure. Students are advised to make necessary adjustments and conserve water resources as much as possible during this period. Meanwhile, alternative arrangements for water supply are expected to be communicated by the relevant university authorities in due course. This development has already triggered mixed reactions among students, many of whom rely solely on campus water for daily activities.
