The University of Ibadan on Thursday, October 2, 2025, hosted its 595th Inaugural Lecture, delivered by Professor Dhikru Adewale Yagboyaju of the Department of Political Science, Faculty of the Social Sciences. Speaking on the theme “Big for Nothing? Nigeria’s Struggle with a Paradox”, Professor Yagboyaju emphasized that the nation’s size and abundant resources have not translated into genuine development or good governance.
Drawing on his long-standing research in the civil service (2015, 2018, 2019, and 2020), the seasoned scholar argued that Nigeria’s paradox is rooted in weak institutions, irresponsible leadership, and a culture of neglect. He observed that while Nigeria has been confronted with big problems, these challenges did not start suddenly but accumulated over time due to failure to enforce order and responsibility.
In offering solutions, Professor Yagboyaju recommended that:
- Order must be maintained even in difficult times, with the economy obeying clear rules and regulations.
2. Leadership should be entrusted to those willing to take responsibility.
3. Civil and public servants must obey the law and do their utmost to protect the people.
4.Cabinet members and officials must change their approach, since without their transformation, Nigeria itself cannot change.
5. Strengthening weak institutions remains critical for national progress.
“One can hardly succeed in a country he doesn’t love. That is why tourists who visit often thrive here, they see opportunities that citizens ignore.” said Prof. Yagboyaju
The event, chaired by the Vice Chancellor, Professor K. O. Adebowale (FAS, mni), and hosted by the Dean of the Faculty, was well attended by academics, policymakers, students, and members of the wider public. Professor Yagboyaju’s lecture not only underscored the contradictions in Nigeria’s nationhood but also urged a collective reawakening to transform the country from a crippled giant into a nation capable of living up to its true potential.
