The Jaw War Preliminary Faculty Round, hosted at The Faculty of Tech’s NFLT on February 2, 2024, and kicking off at 5:20 PM, offered an engrossing experience, captivating students from the University of Ibadan and beyond. The event commenced with introductions of the speakers, Time Keeper, and Judges, followed by an explanation of the debate rules.
The opening debate featured the reigning champions, The Faculty of Arts, represented by Ms. Sakeenah Kareem, facing off against The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine on the topic “Agriculture, The Solution to Nigeria’s wealth creation.“ The Faculty of Arts won with a score of 75.25 to 69.22.
In the second match, The Faculties of Environmental Design and Management and Basic Medical Sciences debated “Private Sector Dominance: A viable solution to healthcare in Africa.” Basic Medical Sciences triumphed with a score of 77.91 against 64.91.
The third debate saw The Faculties of Public Health and Dentistry discussing “Is the NYSC program still Relevant in Nigeria,” with Dentistry winning narrowly by 75.25 to 74.25.
Next, The Faculties of Pharmacy and Social Sciences tackled the topic “Should corporations be legally required to remain politically neutral in their operations.” Social Sciences emerged victorious with a score of 81.58 to 71.25.
The fifth debate involved The Faculties of Economics and Science, focusing on “Media Freedom: Pillar of democracy or tool for political manipulation,” resulting in a win for Science at 76 to 69.33.
The Faculties of Law and Renewable Natural Resources debated “Is Counter-balancing effective in preventing coups,” with Law prevailing at 80.78 to 76.59.
The penultimate debate was between The Faculties of Education and Technology on “Regional Trading Blocs are more effective at promoting economic integration in Africa than continental initiatives,” with Technology winning by 79.91 to 73.83.
In the final round, The Faculties of Clinical Sciences and Agriculture discussed “Should Social Media platforms be held liable for misinformation,” with Agriculture securing a narrow victory at 78.83 to 78.41.
Nafisat Ogunsesan from the Law Faculty was acknowledged as the best speaker for her exceptional performance.
