Seven weeks ago, the University of Ibadan threw open her magnificent gate to accommodate and forge a new set of recruits (Freshers) in baptizing fire of knowledge, wisdom and effectively impacting them with the ability of thinking straight. After all, to think straight is the fount of knowledge ( Recte Sapre Fons). The first few weeks of resumption are fun to returning students as they hunt for telltale signs of Freshers and joke about their naivety. Watching or hearing a story about a new student who hailed a tricycle to “take a drop” from SUB to the faculty of ARTS is funny and will always elicit laughter. For context, SUB is less than a minute away from the faculty of ARTS.
The freshmen’ naivety goes beyond not knowing their way around the school and also manifests in a range of other circumstances like- speech patterns, attitude, mentality, solving assignment questions, improper addressing of lecturers ( using Mr. to address a Professor). In some cases, the naivety also pushes a sense of boldness like in the case of a fresher who according to reports asked a lecturer when an ongoing class will end. But the good news is that with time naivety fades and everyone adjusts and adapts to the new environment and the culture that comes with the environment.
Lastly, tests and examination are always around the corner and it is easy to get lost in the euphoria of being a student or the many activities that takes place on campus. The activities include extracurricular, religious or social activities. The tricky part with all these activities is how much time they consume if proper checks on time management are not put in place. Last week, Fanice held an event at SUB, also last week, there was a Mavins campus tour, this week, infinix is holding an event. In a week or two, some departments will have their picnic events.
To all the new kids in the block, it is imperative to pick the events to attend, the activities to get involved in, and have a disciplined study schedule. Do not dance away your time at an Infinix event on Sunday, underperform in an exam on Monday and be a victim of tsunami on a “Tuesday.
