Political Science has emerged as the 2026 Dean’s Cup champions after defeating defending champions Sociology 3-0 in a one-sided final at the SUB Football Pitch, University of Ibadan, on Saturday 26th, September, 2026.

The final brought together two of the Faculty of the Social Sciences’ strongest sides, with Sociology entering the contest as the defending champions and Political Science looking to wrestle the title away from them.

From the opening whistle, Political Science looked determined to establish control. They took the initiative early, pushing forward and putting the Sociology defence under sustained pressure as they searched for the opening goal.

Their persistence eventually paid off when Mayowa stepped up to convert a penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and giving Political Science a deserved lead. The goal changed the complexion of the contest, with Political Science growing in confidence while Sociology struggled to create a clear response. The defending champions were further punished when an unfortunate own goal doubled Political Science’s advantage.

With the score at 2-0, Sociology needed a quick response to get themselves back into the contest. Political Science, however, remained composed and continued to threaten whenever they moved forward.

Stanley eventually put the result beyond doubt with a moment of individual brilliance.

Receiving the ball in an advanced position, Stanley embarked on a dazzling run, using his dribbling ability to beat the Sociology defenders before rounding the goalkeeper and finishing into the net.

The goal sparked celebrations from the Political Science players and supporters, effectively sealing the championship for their side.

Sociology attempted to respond in the closing stages, but Political Science maintained their advantage and saw out the remainder of the match without conceding.

The final whistle confirmed a comprehensive 3-0 victory for Political Science and ended Sociology’s reign as Dean’s Cup champions.

The victory represents a significant achievement for Political Science, who not only secured the Faculty’s most coveted football prize but also dethroned the side that had entered the final as reigning champions.

For the newly crowned champions, the occasion ended with celebrations as the team received their gold medals and lifted the Dean’s Cup, marking Political Science’s arrival at the top of the Faculty’s football competition.

POS Ladies Finish as Runners-Up on Dean’s Cup Debut

In the women’s category, the Political Science Ladies on Friday 25th, September, 2026 also reached the Dean’s Cup final but were unable to win, losing 2-0 to Sociology, courtesy of a penalty and a sloppy marking.

The defeat came after an encouraging campaign for the POS Ladies, who were making their debut in the Dean’s Cup.

Despite falling short in the final, the team’s run to the championship match ensured they finished their first appearance in the competition with silver medals.

The Sociology women’s team claimed the women’s title after their 2-0 victory, while the Political Science Ladies settled for silver following a campaign that saw them make an immediate impression on the competition.

The contrasting results made for a memorable outing for the Political Science contingent. While the men celebrated championship glory after dethroning the defending champions, the women returned home with silver medals from their historic debut.
