The second Senate sitting of the Political Science Students’ Association (NAPSS), University of Ibadan, on Friday afternoon, was thrown into tension following a failed attempt to impeach the association’s Vice President, Ogubere Ramadiyat, and General Secretary, Sunday Oluwanifesimi.
The impeachment motion, moved by the House Chief Whip, Senator Borere, over allegations of negligence of duty, emerged as the defining moment of the sitting. However, it failed to secure the constitutionally required two-thirds majority, bringing the process to an abrupt halt.
The General Secretary had been summoned to respond to allegations of negligence, while the Vice President faced criticism after appearing before the Senate without any prepared hard or soft copy of her budget presentation and report on the Mentorship Programme.
Despite the failed impeachment bid, both officials were sanctioned by the Senate. They were each fined ₦7,000, mandated to sign undertakings, and directed to submit formal letters of apology.
In a related development, the Senate also reviewed past administrative conduct, as a former Vice President of the NAPSS Executive Council presented a delayed stewardship report. She was fined ₦2,000 and instructed to issue a formal apology for the late submission.
The Senate further extended disciplinary measures to members of the NAPSS Independent Electoral Commission (NAPSSIEC) over absenteeism. The Chairman was fined ₦2,000, while other executive members were fined ₦1,000 each.
In a separate development, the Clerk of the House, Ayomide Ayoade, who had earlier tendered a resignation letter citing personal reasons, reversed the decision during the sitting. The Clerk appealed for reinstatement, and the Senate subsequently approved the request, nullifying the earlier resignation.
The sitting concluded with a strong message from the Senate emphasizing discipline, accountability, and strict adherence to institutional responsibilities.
