The Joint Action Committee (JAC)of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) And Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions(NASU) has extended the strike ultimatum by two weeks.
Both unions had already issued a seven-days strike notice to the Federal Government over outstanding demands and unresolved welfare issues, warning of looming nationwide strike.
In a joint letter signed by the SSANU President, Muhammad Ibrahim, the unions listed some of the issues as “unjust” disbursement of N50 billion earned allowances; non-payment of outstanding withheld salaries and 25/35 per cent salary increments; and renegotiation of 2009FGN and NASU/SSANU agreements.
The unions alleged that efforts to address these outstanding demands with the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, have not yielded any positive results.
If the government did not meet their demands, the unions threatened to embark on industrial action or strikes starting from September 22,2025. The leadership of the union asserted that the decision to extend the ultimatum followed a meeting on Friday, September 19, 2025 chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Abel Enitan, with the following stakeholders : the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC); the Director, Tertiary Education, Federal Ministry of Education; the Director, Trade Union Services and Industrial Relations, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, alongside a few other Staff of Ministry of Education.
The union said the leadership resolved to extend the ultimatum by an additional two weeks, effective from Tuesday. The extension provides the government with an opportunity to initiate the requisite processes to address their demands. If the government fails to do the needful within the extended period, appropriate action will take place.
